Debate on the Suspension of PASO in La Plata

Governor Axel Kicillof called authorities to discuss the possible suspension of PASO in the Province of Buenos Aires. The aim is to ensure citizen trust in institutions, and the date for the elections is crucial.

The debate over the possible suspension of the Open, Simultaneous, and Mandatory Primaries (PASO) in the Province of Buenos Aires has generated great controversy. The discussion arises from the fact that the province would assume the entire cost of these elections, which are not held at the national level, and could also affect the interests of those in power who would have to submit to an internal election.

The governor of the province, Axel Kicillof, emphasized the importance of citizens' trust in institutions and called for a dialogue among all political forces to analyze the implications of suspending the PASO. Despite this, the provincial government assured that, according to the current law that establishes the holding of PASO, the current regulations must be complied with until the Legislature decides whether to suspend them or not.

The Political Reform Commission of the Provincial Chamber of Deputies began to debate the issue, chaired by Deputy Emiliano Balbín, who stressed the need for citizens to know the election date and the electoral process. Balbín requested swift decision-making regarding this topic, which is the exclusive competence of the provincial Legislature.

Governor Kicillof, after urging the Legislature to expedite the suspension process for the PASO, finally set a date to hold the primary elections in the Province of Buenos Aires through decree 367/2025. Emiliano Balbín highlighted the importance of open and responsible dialogue in political decision-making, emphasizing that politics must serve the citizenry.
